Panzer IV ausf. H
Zvezda Models, No. 3620, 1/35
The Panzerkampfwagen IV (PzKpfw IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV, was a German medium tank developed in the late 1930s and used extensively during the Second World War. Its ordnance inventory designation was Sd.Kfz. 161. The Panzer IV was the most widely manufactured German tank of the Second World War, with some 8,500 built. The Panzer IV was used as the base for many other fighting vehicles, including the Sturmgeschütz IV assault gun, Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer, the Wirbelwind self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, and the Brummbär self-propelled gun.
What`s In The Box:
Zvezda models from Russia started releasing their new models in 1/35 scale. Most of them are models that are previously released by other companies. Even Zvezda has released some of those models back in time, as repack of other companies (Italeri/DML). Last few years they decided to make their versions and to offer them to modelling world. The Panzer IV is one of our favourite modelling subjects, and it can be seen in various versions thru WWII service. This version, Ausf.H was mostly used in second half of WWII, and it has fought until the end of the war. It saw battles both on Eastern and Western front and has served in almost all unites of German army.
Model is packed in standard box size as we use to see for 1/35 scale models, but as kind a pizza box. Hard box packaging is protecting parts from damage. There are 9 sprues in ocher color plastic, lower hull, decal sheet. All frames are packed in plastic bags. Details are made very well, without visible flash on them. Pin Marks are present in small numbers, and will not make trouble during assembly. Instruction guide is printed in b/w and its easy readable.
Construction starts with turret . Good thing is that Zvezda models provided interior details for this kit. “Ring” floor, chairs for crew, inside details for main gun, machine gun, air filters, etc are some of details inside. Commanders and crew hatches can be built as open or closed. Main gun barrel is made of two plastic parts that need to be glued. Something that most of modellers are not expecting to see in new releases, but it can be replaced with aftermarket metal barrel, or you can use this one, and spend some time in sanding it after assembling.
Zvezda presented this model on the box art cover with zimmerit. Pz.IV.H versions had zimmerit but its interesting that Zvezda has provided zimmerit only for side skirts of the turret and hull, not for the hull or turret body. It was not unusual to see zimmerit on the side skirts, but it is strange that vehicle didn`t have it on its main body. Some reference photos will be welcome for this specific modification.
Tracks are made in link and length variant, not the standard link by link option. Following assembly instruction, this should not be difficult to do. Only problem can be that you can’t make them to be workable or to make road wheels depicted on an uneven surface. Luckily, there are already aftermarket tracks, so they can be replaced with those in the box.
Painting & Marking:
Painting and marking are provided for two different vehicles:
Colour guide is provided for: Humbrol and Zvezda.
Nice kit, with some nice details. Some modellers on the net noticed that it will be welcome to replace running wheel with some after market or even with old Tamiya Pz IV wheels, to get more accurate look. All in all, nice model from Zvezda. Looking forward for new releases from them in 1/35 scale.
