Marder III Ausf. M Tank Destroyer

Hobby Boss, No.80168, 1/35

Short History:

Marder III was the name for a series of World War II German tank destroyers. They mounted either Soviet 76.2 mm F-22 Model 1936 divisional field guns, or German 7.5 cm PaK 40, in an open-topped fighting compartment on top of the chassis of the Panzer 38(t) . They offered little protection to the crew, but added significant firepower compared to contemporary German tanks. They were in production from 1942 to 1944 and served on all fronts until the end of the war, along with the similar Marder II. The German word Marder means “marten” in English.

What`s in the box:

When Hobby Boss took Tristar models to re-lease them again under their brand name, it was logically expected to see some other variants upgraded with new parts by Hobby boss. Marder III ausf. M, as a final variant of this tank destroyer from WWII, was many years ago announced by Tristar, but it was never released. Now HB is offering new tooling model. As far as I remember, Tamiya released this version 1/35 scale long time ago and it was very nice kit. Maybe a few issues like vinyl tracks, plastic barrel, etc.  Ok, kit is packed in small box with nice box art picture. Kit contains over 500 parts on 7 sprues in beige color plastic, lower hull, three frames in iron/steel color plastic for tracks, PE, metal barrel and decal sheet. Assembly instructions contains 21 steps on 16 pages printed in black and white. Easy to read and follow.

Construction of a model starts with lower chassis. Very nice detail is that HB provided rubber part of the wheel as a separate part, so it will be easy to make wheels as a battle damage or destroyed. Most of the hatches can be made as open or closed. Fenders are also provided as a separate parts. Very nice detailed including all tools and accessories. Interior or fighting compartment is also full detailed. Complete ammo stowage bins with separately molded 75 mm anti tank ammunition are provided, including radio, machine gun, etc.

Main gun is provide in two ptions, as a metal barrel or as a plastic one piece part. Its up to modeller to chose witch one will use. Gun mantled is provided in two plastic parts that need assembling. Main gun can elevate up and down and can move left or right.

Tracks:

Tracks are provided as link by link. No visible flesh on them and no pin marks. Unfortunately as I mentioned they are not made to be workable.  Number of tracks for one side is provided. 95 tracks will be needed for one side. Tracks are made in iron/steel color plastic on three sprues.

Markings and Painting:

Painting and markings are provided in full color for two different vehicles and painting is provided for two vehicles; one in panzer gray camouflage and second in  three tone German camouflage. For the markings there are four German recognizable b/w crosses and number from 0-9 in black-white and red-white option. It will be easy to make  marking of some specific vehicle if you have it in plan. Color guide is provided for : r. Hobby, Vallejo, Model Master, Tamiya and Humbrol.

Highly recommended.
