First look
HobbyBoss – GCT 155mm AU-F1 SPH Based on T-72
scale 1/35

The GCT 155mm is a modern self-propelled artillery vehicle currently in use by the armies of France and Saudi Arabia. It replaced the former Mk F3 155mm in French Army service. The GCT 155mm’s primary advancement is that it incorporates and provides full armor and nuclear-biological-chemical (NBC) protection for its crew of four, while the former Mk F3 155mm offered no protection and could carry only two of its four crew members. Though 60% heavier than the American M109, the GCT 155mm is faster, fires faster and incorporated a more sophisticated fire control system. The GCT 155mm saw combat with the Iraqi Army in the Iran–Iraq War.

The GCT 155mm AU-F1 is based on the AMX30 main battle tank (MBT) chassis and equipped with a 155mm 39-caliber gun with an auto-loading system, giving a rate of fire of 8 rounds per minute., and a sustained rate of fire of 6 rounds per minute. It is also equipped with a roof-mounted 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun. The AU-F1 has an effective range of 23.500 meters firing conventional rounds and 28.000 meters using RAP’s.
The AU-F1 155mm howitzer and turret are designed for integration onto a wider range of armored chassis such as AMX30, Leopard 1, Arjun and the T-72.

The kit

The kit is deliverd in the usual cardboard box with the classic bronco artwork. In the box we will find 644 parts on 16 sprues including hull and 19 parts photo-etched opgrade parts, copper cable, copper wire, vinyl tube and 2 rubber tracks. No decals are delivered in this kit. You will get 1 colorscheme on an A4 page.

The sprues are seperatly packed in a sealed plastic bag with exception of the vynil tracks. Parts are moulded in than styrene with exception of sprues A1 wich are grey. They are the replacementparts for the running gear of this SPH. The quality of the moulding is the usual we get from HobbyBoss, good and fine detail with some flash on several parts. The usual seams are no problem to remove. The only letdown in this kit on first look are the vynil tracks, they have lots of flash wich will be hard to remove. The instruction are given through a black and white printed booklet. You will find here 21 steps to build your SPH. The steps are easy to follow for this build. There are no parts for an interior in this kit wich is a shame I think. This could make this vehicle much more intresting

Other items

This new release is a very welcome addition for people who want to build an impressive SPH.
Although the overal detail is good take note that the running gear and suspension is symplified comparing to other brands making the T-72. There is no interior provided so your only option is to build this SPH with the hatches closed. I’m sure after market items will be available shortly to counter this. You can also consider to buy some aftermarket tracks to replace the vynil ones.
Despite the remarks above, this is still a very nice kit and easy to build.

I’d like to thank HobbySpace for providing the review sample.
